Third largest game reserve. It is situated in the North West Province and is bordered
by Botswana in the north.

Madikwe Game Reserve is already seen as one of the country's "new South Africa" success stories in the area of upliftment and poverty eradication. The development of Madikwe is all about stimulating local economic development, some of the lodges are actually run by the local community.

Game viewing in Madikwe is now at its prime in this Malaria Free game reserve.

In 1992, Madikwe Game Reserve, created from 75,000ha of farmland. The government-sponsored, biggest-ever game relocation program in Africa involved re-stocking and conserving flora and wildlife, which had long since disappeared from the region. Ten thousand animals of 27 major species, including wild dog, cheetah, lion, white and black rhino, buffalo and elephant, have been re-introduced to the Reserve over a six year period with animals coming from various reserves and breeding centers.

Duration

At least three (or more) full days, departing at Johannesburg at 10h30 on day one and returning at 16h00 on last day.

Itinerary

Day 1

Meet & greet you at your guest house. Depart Johannesburg for Madikwe Game Reserve, this is a scenic 3.5 hour drive, OR transfer to Johannesburg Airport for a 40 minute flight to Madikwe.
On arrival at Madikwe you will be met by the lodge staff and game ranger, after check-in they will show you around the lodge and suite. After lunch, guests have free time to relax and enjoy the lodge facilities before the afternoon game drive.

It’s safari time!  Meet your ranger for the afternoon/sunset open-top safari game drive for an outdoor adventure into Africa’s Big Five territory at sun set stop for a drink the drive is continued with the aid of spot lights.

After the game drive returns to the lodge enjoy a delicious dinner then the remainder of the evening is at the guests leisure, weather permitting a traditional outdoor bush barbecue under the African sky is enjoyed at the lodge.

Day 2

A very early morning wake up call an a welcome mug of coffee with your ranger before departing on the early morning game drive. Return to the lodge for hearty breakfast and freshen up then enjoy the lodge surroundings. Escape the midday heat by spending time in or around the swimming pool, relaxing in your room/tent or enjoy a siesta. A lunch/high tea can be enjoyed looking out over the bush and a waterhole. Meet your ranger for an afternoon tea and snacks before departing on the afternoon/evening game drive. After the sun set stop for a drink the drive is continued with the aid of spot lights looking for any animals not jet spotted. We end the evening with dinner and drinks around a fire in a traditional "boma".

Day 3

A very early morning wake up call an a welcome mug of coffee with your ranger before departing on the early morning game drive. Return to the lodge for hearty breakfast, after breakfast time to get ready and check out. A short "safari drive" to the rune way for a short flight to Johannesburg. Or we will meet you at the lodge and drive back to Johannesburg.

How to get there

A scheduled air service operates daily to Madikwe from Johannesburg International Airport. This 40 minute flight is the easiest and most popular way to get to Madikwe.

Being only a 40 minute flight private aircraft charters are also very popular and convenient.
From Johannesburg it is approximately 350km and is a very pleasant three and a half hour drive.

Wild dogs are a speciality of Madikwe and due to their rarity and fascinating behaviour,are a wonderful sight. They are also known as Cape hunting dogs or painted dogs because of their tricoloured (black, white and tan) abstract coat.

Not only does Madikwe Game Reserve boast the 'Big Five' but it also has the 'Super 7'! This adds cheetah and wild dog to the traditional five; leopard, lion, buffalo, elephant and rhino.
