Black Rhino Game lodge is a private luxury lodge in the black rhino concession area of the Pilanesberg Game Reserve.
Black Rhino Game Lodge is a hidden treasure at the foot of an ancient volcanic crater that today comprises one of South Africa’s most exciting Big 5 eco-tourism destinations, the greater Pilanesberg National Park. It is from here, accompanied by your personal game ranger, that you will be able explore a 57 000ha malaria free wildlife wonderland and discover the magic of the African bush. The rangers will concentrate on the 2000ha of private concession area and the Wilderness area of the Pilanesberg to keep out of the general public area of Pilanesberg thus offering a true safari drive experience.
Located in the west side of the ‘Malaria Free’ Pilanesberg National Park, and a comfortable 2 hour 30 minute drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria, Black Rhino Game Lodge is the ideal location for a luxurious bushveld breakaway.
The Lodge is built in a Tamboti forest, overlooking a busy waterhole, which is a hive of bird and animal activity, and a playground for the elephant.
Black Rhino Game Lodge boasts 14 very spacious and luxuriously appointed free-standing suites to ensure that you will go wild in style. Each comfortable air-conditioned suite offers a TV, hot beverage facility, and private patio that opens out into the bush. The designer bathroom opens out onto a totally secluded outdoor shower. In addition, there is a small central entertainment area comprising a boma, fully equipped kitchen, lounge, dining and covered patio with a plunge pool.
On many occasions, the stillness of the night is broken by the roaring of lions, and the franklins sing the morning wake up call. Once, you are awakened with a hot cup of coffee, your host ranger will take you out on an exceptional game drive, taking you through Black Rhino Reserve, into the unexplored valley of the Pilanesberg and if need be the 200km network of the public Pilanesberg Park roads.
In this area you do have the privilege to see the buffalo on regular occasions as they have taken shelter in the more remote areas that is not accessible to any other visitors to the park.
From Black Rhino Game Lodge experience a thrilling wildlife experience on foot. The rangers conduct Walking Safaris instead of the usual game drive, the group is limited to 8 guests and this is an amazing way to get close to nature, see the small but very important species. See, feel, smell and touch the grasses, ground and trees. Utilize your senses to create an unforgettable encounter with nature. There is a small cost involved.
Children are welcome at Black Rhino Game Lodge, but under 5 years old may not be allowed on the game drives due to safety reasons.
The big advantage is Black Rhino Game Lodge is in a private concession which is now part of the Pilanesberg. They have 14 very comfortable chalets so you get personal attention and the meals are more like home cooking, not bulk hotel cooking. Being in a concession they have about 8000ha (19 700 acres) of Pilanesberg to drive around on which is closed to the public so you do get a much better safari experience in a smaller (9 seater) 4x4 and no public vehicles are allowed in this concession, they can also stay out longer at night if the sightings are good, and they can stop for sun downer drinks. If need be they can go into the public section of Pilanesberg. Being a small private lodge the better service and special attention the daily rate is more here but worth it!
The lodges in the “public area” of Pilanesberg are also very nice but that are more of a “Hotel” in the bush with 50+ rooms so you lose the personal attention. The game drives are conducted in 20 seater trucks so not as personal and are in the public section of the park so the rangers are restricted to the park roads. You will see lots of private cars driving around as well – especially at good game sightings. If you are interested in visiting Sun City then Bakubung is ideal as it is only a 10 minute drive away and the lodge does offer a shuttle service.
